Dr. Ryan Guillemette is an aquatic microbiologist, with expertise in biogeochemical cycling and pathogen ecology. Ryan uses a variety of methods to measure the rates of organic matter degradation and bacterial growth, including stable and radioactive isotopes, microscopy, mass spectrometry, and next-generation sequencing.
He works jointly with USC and the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) to study the rate of eDNA degradation by bacteria. His work will help inform projects that rely on eDNA signals for biological monitoring and assessment.
Ryan has previous postdoctoral experience at the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Newport, OR, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Maine in 2009 and his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego in 2018.
