Delta Murphy Lecture Series
Named in memory of a USC alumna and former Whittier, CA, mayor, the Delta Murphy Lecture Series addresses socially connected issues in the worlds of environmental science and sustainability. Delta Murphy was a passionate and dedicated supporter of the environment, serving as a chairwoman of the Wrigley Institute and leading the creation of a sustainable development plan for Santa Catalina Island.

Speaker: Ed Yong

He was awarded journalism’s top honor, the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting, for his coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. His bestselling books include I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us, a groundbreaking examination of the relationship between animals and microbes, and An Immense World, a comprehensive look at the fascinating sensory world of animals.

2021 Delta Murphy Lecture
“Women, Science, and the Road to Inclusive Leadership”
The 2021 Delta Murphy Lecture, held virtually, brought together a distinguished panel of women scientists to discuss their experiences as researchers and leaders. Dr. Carly Kenkel, a USC Biological Sciences professor, moderated the discussion. Panelists included:
- Dr. Rita Colwell, microbiologist and founder of CosmosID, a bioinformatics company
- Dr. Hope Jahren, geochemist and geobiologist with the University of Oslo (Norway) and author of the bestselling memoir Lab Girl
- Dr. Dawn Wright, geographer and oceanographer and chief scientist at Esri, the leading producer of GIS mapping software
