Research Expertise:Biological oceanography, microbial ecology, nitrogen fixation and the nitrogen cycle

Research & Practice Areas:My research background is as a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist, primarily interested in microbial activity measurements related to the nitrogen cycle, and how microbes and biogeochemical cycles interact. Involving undergraduates in research is my current major focus, and students have worked on projects such as: mapping of water pollution sources and comparison to socioeconomic data; nitrogen fixation associated with degradation of invasive Sargassum; nitrogen cycling activity and players in aquaponics food systems; and native shoreline community restorations ability to prevent shoreline erosion (associated with the Living Shorelines project run by Orange County Coastkeeper).

Dr. Jill Sohm is broadly trained as a biological oceanographer and microbial ecologist, but her current research is student-centered and ranges from studies on water pollution in the US to coastal processes and sustainability education. Dr Sohm is currently leading an initiative to expand sustainability in the USC curriculum through grants and faculty development workshops, and focuses in her career on educating the next generation of environmental leaders.
